AHIP-certified Medicare agents

AHIP-Certified Medicare Agents — Confirmed for the Current Plan Year

AHIP certification is mandatory for selling Medicare Advantage and Part D — and it resets every plan year. An agent certified last year is not compliant this year. Amerance verifies current-plan-year AHIP status before any agent reaches you, so you're never appointing someone who has to stop and retrain mid-AEP.

What AHIP certification means for your agency

Why plan-year compliance is non-negotiable.

America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) requires agents to complete Medicare training and pass a certification exam each plan year before they can sell Medicare Advantage or PDP products. Carriers enforce this at appointment — an uncertified agent simply cannot write MA business. If you find out after you've onboarded someone, you've wasted that onboarding.

Annual reset, every plan year

AHIP certification from the prior year does not carry over. Agents must re-certify for each new plan year. We confirm current-year completion, not just that the agent has done it before.

Required by every major MA carrier

United, Humana, Aetna, BCBS — all require current AHIP certification before an agent can be appointed and begin writing. Without it, the appointment process stalls.

We verify — not just ask

We confirm AHIP status directly, not by accepting an agent's self-report. If a new plan year's training hasn't yet opened, we confirm a clear path to completion before AEP.

Common questions

AHIP and Medicare agent compliance questions

Does AHIP certification expire?

Yes — AHIP certification is plan-year specific and must be renewed annually. Agents must complete the current year's training and pass the exam before AEP to be eligible to sell Medicare Advantage and PDP products. An agent certified for the prior plan year is not compliant for the current one.

What happens if an agent isn't AHIP-certified?

Carriers will not appoint an uncertified agent, and an appointed agent who lets their certification lapse may be suspended from writing new business. This creates significant operational risk if you discover the gap mid-AEP. Amerance flags and resolves this before placement.

Do agents need AHIP for Medicare Supplement?

No — AHIP certification is required for Medicare Advantage and Part D products. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is not a Medicare Advantage product and does not require AHIP certification, though agents still need the appropriate state license and may need to complete carrier-specific training.

Can you place agents before the new plan year's AHIP training opens?

Yes. If the current plan year is still active and an agent holds current AHIP certification, they can be placed now and will re-certify when the new training opens. We'll note their certification status clearly so you know the timeline.
