Independent Medicare Agents — LOA-Ready, Release Verified
Independent agents who want to work under your LOA or direct appointment are the most flexible hire in Medicare — they bring their own book relationships and multi-carrier experience. But confirming they're actually free to move is the job. Amerance checks release status, existing contract obligations, and carrier appointment history before you see anyone.
Request independent agents →LOA vs. independent — and how we screen for each.
LOA (Letter of Appointment)
The agency owns the carrier appointment. The agent writes business under the agency's contract and is released by the agency — not the carrier directly. We confirm the agent is free to move to an LOA structure and has no existing LOA obligations blocking them.
Independent / Direct Appointment
The agent holds their own carrier appointment under their NPN. They maintain more autonomy over their book. We confirm they can also contract with your agency — checking for non-solicitation agreements and carrier-specific exclusivity clauses.
An independent agent who isn't free is worth nothing to you.
Experienced independent agents often have contract history with multiple FMOs, IMOs, or direct carrier agreements. Some of those agreements include non-solicitation clauses, waiting periods before they can move to a competing agency, or carrier-specific exclusivity requirements. We surface all of it during screening — before you've invested time interviewing someone who can't actually contract with you.
What we check: existing LOA obligations, non-compete or non-solicitation agreements, carrier appointment exclusivity, waiting periods from prior releases, and current contracting status across their book.

What agencies ask about independent Medicare agents
What's the advantage of hiring independent agents over captive?
Independent agents typically have broader carrier relationships and multi-plan experience — they're used to comparing options and selling on fit rather than just recommending one carrier's products. For agencies that offer multiple carriers, independent agents often adapt faster and generate stronger client retention because their recommendations carry more credibility.
Can an independent agent work under my LOA?
Many experienced independent agents are willing to work under an agency LOA, particularly when the agency offers strong lead support, comp structures, or market access they don't have independently. During our screening conversation we ask about contracting preference and make sure any agent we match to an LOA structure is genuinely open to it — not just telling you what you want to hear.
What if an agent has a non-compete from a prior agency?
We ask directly about prior agreements during the screening conversation and confirm release status before presenting any agent as available. If an agent has a binding non-solicitation or waiting period, we won't match them to your role until they're clear.
Do independent agents require different onboarding than captive agents?
Independent agents often have existing carrier relationships and appointment history, which can accelerate some parts of onboarding — but may also mean navigating existing release paperwork if they're moving from one structure to another. We flag this clearly in every profile so you know what to expect before the first conversation.
